Rivalry games create extra excitement to an already exciting sport. Pro and college football offer a full slate of bitter rivalries to be enjoyed by fans and many have a colorful history that spills over into each new game played. But there is something special about high school rivalries, something a little more personal. Maybe you played Pee Wee ball with the other teams quarterback or maybe your daddy works with the linebackers daddy. Or maybe, your town is divided down the middle and your football teams victory somehow proves that your side of the line is better.
ri·val: One who attempts to equal or surpass another, or who pursues the same object as another; a competitor.
There are many high profile high school football rivalries that get press every year and Rivals.com featured a great article in 2008 capping the Top 10 biggest rivalries. But High School Football rivalries are so much more than big schools competing for playoff spots in front of huge crowds. There are thousands of small schools or even schools with unspectacular records that square off against their enemies and play with something extra that’s not available during “regular” games. They may not make the news, but you can bet your jock strap the locals talk about it their favorite hangouts for years as the stories grow larger with each telling.
There are great stories out there that will not get told on ESPN or featured on Rivals and Prep News Report wants to know about them. Who is your schools biggest rivalry and why? What is the most memorable game they have played?
We look forward to hearing your stories.

NOTHING beats a good GA high school football rivalry game in the fall. Warner Robins, GA is known for 2 things: Robins Air Force Base – the largest single employer in the state – and high school football. Northside High School & Warner Robins High School have been playing each other since the 60’s. For the first 30 years, they were the only 2 schools in town which was divided by the main drag in town — Watson Blvd — into 2 halves: the north & the south. The series was dominated by the oldest school – the Warner Robins Demons – in the 60’s, 70’s, & 80’s when they won 4 state titles and 2 ‘National’ titles (‘76 & ‘81). Even during the years when the rivarly was a one-sided affair, the annaul Warner Robins / Northside showdown was the biggest thing going in middle Georgia. The first mega-showdown occurred in 1975 – the year before the Demons won their first state & national championship. The Demons were loaded with such future stars as James Brooks (Auburn / Cincinnati Bengals) & Ron Simmons (FSU & WWE World Champion) and were riding a 7-year win streak in the series. International City Stadium (seating capacity of approx. 8500) was jammed packed with acrowd of 22,000+ fans that included every square inch of the hills that surround the stadium being covered with fans on sitting on blankets. Both teams were undefeated and played a classic with the NHS Eagles finally breaking the 7-year losing streak in dramatic fashion with a 20-18 last second victory. The mid-90’s saw a swing in the series as the Eagles finally began to grow out of the shadow of their nationally renowned rival on the south side of town. In 2000, both teams entered the week 10 showdown with perfect 9-0 records and were ranked 1 & 2 in the state. The Demons would prevail before another overflow crowd by a score of 23-20. The Eagles, however, began to dominate on the state level in the 2000s and finally won their first 2 state championships in 2006 & 2007. No matter who is the favorite or the hot team of the moment, the annual NHS / WRHS showdown is an event the football fans circle on their calendar as soon as the schedules come out. Everyone must attend one clash in their lifetime to understand the magnitude of the game.
