Legendary Georgia Coach Retires

After 2 National Championships, 3 State Championships, 10 Quarterfinal Appearances, 23 Region Championships, 29 City Championships, 355 Wins, 300 scholarship athletes, and 11 NFL Players, Head Coach Robert Davis has decided to retire. After 44 years as a Coach and 36 years as a Head Coach, he deserves a rest.

Robert Davis burst onto the scene in the early seventies taking over the Head Coaching position at Warner Robins High School in Middle Georgia. It didn’t take him long to establish winning ways at the school and by 1976 he had built a state and national powerhouse that ran roughshod over its opponents. That year, the Warner Robins Demons shared the mythical National Championship with Gerry Faust and his Moeller Crusaders from Cincinnati, OH.

Most high school prognosticators from those days agreed on two things  – 1)  The Crusaders would not have stood a chance against the ‘76 Demons and 2)  Notre Dame should have hired Robert Davis instead of Gerry Faust!  Thankfully for Warner Robins they didn’t because five years later in 1981, Davis and his Demons once again bullied every team on their schedule to repeat as State and National Champions, while going virtually unchallenged throughout the playoffs. This time Davis stood alone at the top of the football world with his team as the best in the country.

Davis is the second winningest coach in Georgia history and the winningest coach at the state’s largest classifications. His team won more games from 1970 – 1980 than any other team in Georgia and Warner Robins was named “Team Of The Decade.” He was selected to coach in 3 Georgia All-Star games and, as expected, won all three. In 1990 he lead the Georgia All-Stars to victory over the talented Florida All-Stars.

Coach Davis left Warner Robins in 1997 to take over a new program, Westside of Macon, Ga., and true to form immediately constructed a winning program that won region titles and was an annual contender for the state title.

Having never endured a losing season, Coach Davis said he will enjoy his free time by watching his Grandsons play on the same field he coached on for so many years.

Coach, I just wanted to personally thank you for everything you did for me to make me the man I am today. You helped me turn my life around at a time in my life that I was about to take the wrong path. You and your coaches stuck with me, and a lot of other punks that didn’t have a clue about life, and instilled in us some of the best values we cherish everyday. Thanks again and congrats! Scott Noblitt, WRHS Player – 1988 – 1991

Coach Davis will have more time to enjoy his grandkids.

Coach Davis will have more time to enjoy his grandkids.

Greater than all the stats and championships that Coach Davis earned during his career is his lasting contribution to the game through his players. They have a tremendous amount of respect for him and say that playing for him was the defining moment of stepping into manhood. Many of his players, too many to count, got into coaching after their careers and now dot the high school, college and NFL landscape. They are passing on his lessons and examples to the next generation. Like a mighty oak tree that has dropped thousands of acorns, Coach Robert Davis’ legacy will continue to grow for years and years to come.

Sorry to hear about Coach Davis' retirement. I have heard so many great things about him over the years and have known a few of his players from the '76 Warner Robins team. It's unlikely that we will see men of this caliber ever again. Between the level of commitment necessary, to the tremendous expectations placed on coaches, they just don't last as long these days, and that's too bad.

I wish coach well in his retirement, and tell him to be sure to take some sunscreen to the beach.

    God speed.

Thanks Rex. If my memory serves me correct, you played with George Collins and Jimmy Womack at Georgia. I agree that we probably won't see a lot more coaches reach this level. Jimmy had a good career at Georgia and George is the Head Coach at AAA Rutland Hurricanes in Macon, Ga.

PS – Rex, do you have any eligability left?

It's hard to believe that I could admire someone so much, when most of my memories of Coach Davis are when he was grabbing my facemask, calling my manhood into question or kicking me through “The Cage” yelling, “Stay low, Dadgum-it!” as my helmet gonged against the bar on the other side, but I honestly do admire the hell out of the man. He will long be remembered as one of the greatest coaches in Georgia High School history.

He was a great coach and is an even better man, as am I for kowing him!

  4. Great article. It's sad to say that you're not gonna see coaches stay at one school and do what Coach Davis did anymore. Have fun relaxing coach. You are certainly a “Legend”.

    Thanks Mark.

Just so the folks know, Mark has coached on the high school and college lever in the northeast and now has a company called FB Game Film. It is a great service for college and HS football coaches that would like to spend a little more time on X's and O's than copying game film for hours! Check it out at http://www.fbgamefilm.com/

Thanks again Mark and I know Coach Davis appreciates the accolades from New Jersey!

Well said MoDawg. I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Coach Davis. The man I turned out to be I owe alot to him. I was sad to hear of his retirement but nobody deserves it more than him. Congratulations Coach and thank you for touching the lifes of so many people. You are truly one of a kind.

Don't be a stranger and stop by the shop anytime!

Super article. I am a 1974 graduate of WRHS and had the pleasure of knowing coach Davis. I attended many Demon games in the 70s. The atmosphere and spirit of those games were truly great high school football experiences. As a fan you were always confident of victory (a luxury many fans have never had). Thanks for the friday night memories (and saturday night) as you will always be cosidered legendary. GO DEMONS!!!!!!!!!

    Coach Davis

I also would like the chance to say “Thank You” for all the values you instilled in me as a young man. You were tough, but fair, and refused to settle for anything less than 100%. As a coach at W.R.H.S., you were a legend and all the men that played for you looked to you as a role model. I was not a starter back in 1988, but I busted my tail in practice and was proud to have that Rockin “R” on my helmet. After an especially tough hit by a safety, I held on to the ball and you told me, “We are going to make something out you yet and You have the right stuff to be a good player. I will never forget the sweat and blood I shed on the field. I have used alot of what I learned as a player under you that has helped me become an Army Officer and a helicopter pilot with 20 years of service next year. Thanks again Coach, enjoy retirement you deserve it. Joel Pierce
